Licences the broker lists FCA · ASIC · CySEC · FSCA·head office London, UK
FXCM (founded 1999, headquartered in London, FCA/ASIC/FSCA licences) is a long-standing CFD broker, but it was fined and permanently banned by the US CFTC in 2017 for trading against its clients.
Two registers, two name changes, one group
Checked on 19/08/2026, FXCM's licences exist in both Australia and Cyprus, but no register still shows the word FXCM in the company name position.
| Register | Number | Company name in the register |
|---|---|---|
| ASIC (Australia) | AFS 309763 | Stratos Trading Pty. Limited |
| CySEC (Cyprus) | CIF 392/20 | Stratos Europe Ltd (ex FXCM EU LTD) |
The word ex in the second row is how CySEC records a former name. It confirms this is indeed the former FXCM legal entity, only renamed to Stratos. The Australian register does not record the former name, so if you only search ASIC you will have no clue linking Stratos to FXCM.
Renaming a legal entity is legal and fairly common. The only point to note is this: from now on, if you want to check this broker's licences yourself, searching for "FXCM" in Australia returns nothing; you have to search by number, or by the name Stratos.
FXCM at a glance
FXCM is the hardest case to score in the series of reviews I have written on FXCM and other veteran brokers, because two real facts exist side by side and pull in opposite directions. On one side: a CFD broker operating since 1999, currently holding FCA, ASIC and FSCA licences, all from strict regulators.
On the other: in 2017, the US CFTC fined the broker 7 million USD and permanently banned it from the US market for trading against its clients.
This 2026 FXCM review puts both on the table, plus a maze you need to know about before checking the licences yourself: the broker's legal entities now carry the Stratos name, and the word FXCM no longer appears anywhere in the registers. Score across 6 criteria: 4.2/5.
Founded in 1999, headquartered in London, UK. Current licences: FCA, ASIC, CySEC, FSCA. Platforms: Trading Station (its long-standing in-house platform), MT4, TradingView. Minimum deposit 50 USD, spreads from ~0.6 pip depending on the account, two main lines: Standard, and Active Trader for high volume.
The 2017 CFTC penalty: a fact that cannot be skipped
I start with the bad news, because it carries weight. In 2017, the CFTC concluded that FXCM had an undisclosed interest in the market maker taking the other side of its own clients' trades, while publicly advertising a “No Dealing Desk” model, meaning it did not take the other side of client orders.
The result: a 7 million USD fine and a permanent ban from the US market for the company and its two founders. FXCM then sold its US client business and changed its ownership structure.
Today the broker has new owners and sits under FCA/ASIC/FSCA. But to me, a permanent ban for behaving contrary to its own advertising is not the kind of mark that fades with time. It is a fact you have to weigh yourself when there are brokers alongside it that have never faced a similar ruling.
Checking FXCM's licences: be ready to type “Stratos”
Checked on 19/08/2026, the licences exist in both Australia and Cyprus, but no register still shows the word FXCM in the company name column:
| Register | Number | Company name in the register |
|---|---|---|
| ASIC (Australia) | AFS 309763 | Stratos Trading Pty. Limited |
| CySEC (Cyprus) | CIF 392/20 | Stratos Europe Ltd (ex FXCM EU LTD) |
The original Australian entry:
STRATOS TRADING PTY. LIMITED. AFS Licence 309763, granted 15/05/2007, MELBOURNE VIC. ABN/ACN 121 934 432.
The word ex in the CySEC entry is how the Cyprus register records a former name, and it is exactly what confirms Stratos Europe is the former FXCM EU. The Australian register does not record former names, so if you only search ASIC for “FXCM” you get zero results and no clue linking the two names.
Renaming a legal entity is legal and not unusual; the only inconvenience is that from now on, to check this broker yourself, you search by AFS number 309763 or by the word Stratos.
In the UK, the FCA Register lists Stratos Markets Limited (FXCM UK), reference number 217689. A warning that comes with it is worth having: the FCA lists many “clone” websites impersonating FXCM, already flagged as Unauthorised. Only trade through fxcm.com, and do not click unfamiliar links impersonating it.
| ASIC AFS register, August 2026 edition | |
|---|---|
| Licence number | AFS 309763 |
| Licensed entity | Stratos Trading Pty. Limited |
| Date granted | 15/05/2007 |
| ABN/ACN | 121 934 432 |
STRATOS TRADING PTY. LIMITED. AFS Licence 309763, granted 15/05/2007, MELBOURNE VIC.
Note when you check it yourself: this licence is not held under the name FXCM but under Stratos Trading Pty. Limited. Typing "FXCM" into the ASIC search tool returns nothing; search by AFS number 309763 or the exact entity name above.
FXCM's regulation as it applies to your own account
FCA, ASIC and FSCA all belong to the group of strict regulators. But that trio protects clients of the corresponding legal entity, and where you are placed is a matter of contract.
Vietnamese clients at international brokers usually end up in the branch with much thinner protection than UK or Australian clients, in exchange for higher leverage. Read the legal entity name in the account-opening terms before depositing; with FXCM, after the section above, you already know that name may be a variant of Stratos.
Trading costs at FXCM
Spreads from ~0.6 pip depending on the account: the Standard line runs floating spreads, while the Active Trader line offers better conditions for high-volume traders. A level of ~0.6 pip sits mid-table: better than the fixed-spread group, but not reaching the Raw/ECN group near 0 plus commission.
To compare costs correctly, add up the total cost per lot on the pair you trade most, including every charge, before concluding whether it is expensive or cheap. The broker has no Cent account, so beginners who want to practise with small amounts will have fewer options.
Deposits and withdrawals: on a business-day rhythm
Bank transfer, cards and e-wallets are all supported; requests are processed on business days, and fees depend on the method and region. E-wallets arrive faster than banks, and finishing KYC early makes everything smoother.
This is not a broker in the camp of automatic withdrawals measured in minutes, which you should know in advance so you do not hold it to the wrong expectations.
Trading Station, MT4, TradingView: a toolkit geared towards technical traders
Trading Station is FXCM's in-house platform, developed since before MT4 became widespread, and it comes with a set of data tools and an API for algorithmic traders; this is where FXCM is genuinely different.
MT4 serves those used to the old way, TradingView those who analyse on web charts. MT5 is not on the list, which those committed to that system should note.
What you gain and lose by choosing FXCM, the way I weigh it
Gains: a track record since 1999, more than 25 years; a current licence set of FCA, ASIC, CySEC, FSCA; Trading Station plus an API and data tools for algorithmic traders; TradingView available.
Losses: the 2017 CFTC ruling with a 7 million USD fine and a permanent ban in the US, a mark you must weigh yourself even though the broker has changed owners; few account types, no Cent; not licensed in Vietnam.
Is FXCM a scam?
For FXCM this question needs a two-part answer, and I refuse to shorten it to one.
The present part: it is not a scam model. The FCA/ASIC/FSCA licences are real and can be checked; it has operated continuously since 1999; the common complaints come down to misunderstood account conditions, excessive leverage, and verification procedures when withdrawing large amounts, three things found at every serious broker.
The historical part: in 2017, the practice of trading against clients was ruled on by the CFTC; it is real, there is a ruling, there is a fine. The broker has changed ownership since then. How far you trust the new structure is your own decision; my job is to make sure you do not decide without this fact.
And in Vietnam, FXCM is not licensed. The responsibility for the choice is yours.
Who is FXCM a good fit for?
People who value tools: Trading Station, an API and data for algorithmic systems, plus the current Tier-1 licence set.
Not a good fit: newcomers with small capital who need a Cent account to practise, and people for whom the 2017 ruling is enough to lose sleep over, since there are brokers with cleaner histories to choose from.

Check FXCM yourself before depositing a large amount
- Real cost. Open the price board on your own account at two different times of day, then add spread and commission into a cost per lot. The figure the broker publishes is an average; what you get on a given trade can be higher.
- Withdrawal speed. Withdraw a small amount first and note when you requested it and when the money arrived. Speed depends on the payment channel and your verification status, so there is no single figure.
- Legal entity. Read the company name in your account terms. That name decides where you can complain.

Is FXCM trustworthy today?
