Is IQ Option legit? The company you actually sign with

IQ Option has a real European licence, but the company holding it serves only European clients, and since 2018 it has not been allowed to sell binary options to retail clients. Open an account from Vietnam and you sign with a different, offshore company, outside CySEC supervision and outside the compensation fund.

One brand, two companies, two fates

The first company is registered in Cyprus and holds a CySEC licence. It may serve only clients in the European Economic Area, and since 2018, under the ESMA order, it may no longer sell binary options to retail clients. All it has left is CFDs with tightly capped leverage.

The second company is registered offshore and serves the rest of the world, Vietnam included. It still sells option products, and it is not supervised by CySEC.

When you open an account from Vietnam, your contract is with the second company, registered on an island state where supervision is much lighter and where European standards on segregating client money, audits and compensation do not reach. The CySEC licence on the promotional page does not protect you.

Search “IQ Option” on the CySEC register and you get… a different name

On CySEC’s register of Cypriot Investment Firms (the regulator’s public register), the name that comes up is not “IQ Option”:

IQBroker Europe Ltd (ex IQOption Europe Ltd), licence no. 247/14, granted 30/07/2014.

The word “ex” is how the regulator records the former name of an entity that has been renamed. The entity holding the European licence no longer carries the brand name you see when you open the app.

This detail sets a very specific trap for anyone checking for themselves. You type “IQ Option” into the CySEC search box, a different name comes up, and it is easy to reach the wrong conclusion in one of two directions: either “not found, so the broker must be unlicensed”, or “there is a similar name, so that must be it”.

Both are guesses. The right way: search the licence number (247/14) rather than the brand name, then compare it with the entity name written in your account agreement.

The pattern of renaming the entity while keeping the brand is not unique to IQ Option. The same thing happened at Neotech (the predecessor of FXCE) and Ultima Markets. Renaming an entity is legal, and licence 247/14 still appears on the register.

The renaming says nothing about motive. The practical problem for you remains the point made at the start: that licence belongs to an entity serving only European clients, while you sign with a different entity outside that supervision.

Europe banned it, the clients did not vanish, they were sent through another door

This detail explains why you can still open an account even though the whole of Europe has banned the product. After ESMA banned the sale of binary options to retail investors from 02/07/2018 and the FCA banned it permanently from 02/04/2019, the product did not disappear. It simply stopped being sold to European clients.

At an ordinary forex broker, being pushed onto an offshore entity costs you the compensation fund, the fund that pays clients when a licensed firm goes bust.

Here the consequence is far heavier: clients outside the EU get a product that EU regulators concluded causes systematic harm. Something EU clients are no longer allowed to buy.

When the FCA made the ban permanent, it estimated the ban would save UK consumers up to 17 million pounds a year. That figure measures the harm in a tightly supervised market; nobody can measure the corresponding figure in a market with no ban.

A question worth asking yourself: if a product is banned from sale to consumers in the UK and across the EU, what makes it more suitable for you? The honest answer usually lies not in the product but in the fact that nobody where you live has banned it yet.

One more register entry worth noting

Licence 247/14 is real, granted 30/07/2014, company registration number 327751, and the contact email on the register is compliance@iqbroker.eu. The name on the record, though, has moved away from the brand you see when you open the app.

This company’s name also appears on the list of Deregistered CASPs, the group removed from CySEC’s Register of Crypto-Asset Service Providers.

Removal from the CASP register does NOT mean the investment firm licence was revoked. They are two different registers. One covers crypto-asset services, the other covers investment services.

The reason given by industry news sites is that the company stopped providing crypto-asset services for 6 consecutive months (around September 2023). CySEC’s register page shows only the name in the removed group, with no date and no reason.

What really matters for Vietnamese clients lies elsewhere: after the EU and the UK banned retail binary options, clients outside Europe were routed to a different entity, where the ban does not reach and where there is no compensation fund either.

The product inside: why I call this betting, not investing

Many analyses in Vietnam call IQ Option outright disguised gambling when it runs the binary option model: you bet on whether the price goes up or down within a short time frame, win ~70–90% of your stake if right, and lose the whole stake if wrong.

That asymmetric structure tilts the long-run expectation towards the platform, just like the house edge in a casino.

That is why promises of “a way to always win on IQ Option” or “an unbeatable method” are usually a lure to get you to deposit, sometimes bundled with a multi-level style referral scheme.

The legal picture around the product is consistent with that view: ESMA banned sales to retail clients, Israel banned the whole industry because of widespread fraud, and Indonesia treats binary options as illegal online gambling and has blocked the websites of IQ Option along with Binomo and Olymp Trade.

In Vietnam, this model is not regulated by the State Bank of Vietnam. Nobody protects you in a dispute or when a withdrawal gets stuck.

Vietnamese user complaints circle around three themes

In Vietnamese trader communities (TraderViet and many other forums), reports about IQ Option centre on: accounts locked after a winning streak, abnormal slippage on short trades (the fill price differs from the price you saw when you clicked), and drawn-out verification when withdrawing large amounts.

The density of complaints following the same pattern, combined with the fact that Vietnamese clients have no regulator to turn to, is a risk signal you should not ignore.

Put it next to a properly regulated broker and the gap is obvious

Imagine opening an account with a forex/CFD broker where the FCA/ASIC/CySEC licence applies to that very account. Your money sits segregated at a separate bank, not mixed with the broker’s own money.

Auditors come round on a schedule. If the broker goes bust, there is a compensation mechanism. And above all, you have a state body whose door you can knock on with a complaint.

An IQ Option account opened from Vietnam meets none of those criteria. Not because the broker forgot, but because the entity serving you is placed where nobody demands those things.

IQ Option is more “reputable” than pure binary option platforms in the depth of its brand and in having once been licensed in Europe.

But for anyone trading from Vietnam, that protection exists only on advertising paper: you trade with an offshore entity, on an option product already banned in Europe itself, with no mechanism for claiming your rights when something goes wrong.

DCTopTrade’s assessment: not recommended. Beginners should start with the brokers on our list of the best forex brokers for beginners, where the licence applies to your own account.

A two-minute check: whose name is on your contract

You can do this yourself, without searching any foreign register, and it answers the deciding question.

Open the client agreement in the app or in the website footer and find the company name. It sits in the first or last line of the document, with a registered address. That is the party that will stand opposite you in any dispute.

Compare that address with Europe: if it names an island, your account sits outside the scope of the European licence, and outside the 20,000 EUR compensation fund that comes with it.

Next, check the deposit section: what is the name of the party receiving the money. In some cases the payment recipient differs from both companies above, a detail worth keeping a screenshot of.

If a withdrawal has already failed to go through: complete identity verification and then try withdrawing a small amount while the sum is still small, and keep evidence as described in the article on locked accounts and stuck withdrawals.

Frequently asked questions

Does IQ Option have a CySEC licence?

IQ Option’s European entity has a CySEC licence, but it serves only EU clients and may no longer sell binary options. Vietnamese clients trade with a separate offshore entity that CySEC does not supervise.

Is trading options on IQ Option from Vietnam safe?

There is no protection mechanism: the option product is banned from retail sale in the EU and the UK, and your account belongs to an offshore entity that no state regulator supervises.

Why is IQ Option blocked in Indonesia?

Indonesia treats binary options as illegal online gambling and has blocked access to unlicensed sites, IQ Option among them.

How is IQ Option different from Binomo?

IQ Option has a genuinely licensed EU entity (for EU clients, CFDs only) and an older brand. Binomo has only a certificate from a private organisation. But for Vietnamese clients, both mean trading with an entity that no state supervises.
